Collective Farm

- (Soviet Union series, Part 4) In South Central Asia--in a desert area that borders China and Afghanistan--irrigation has created 200 square miles of arable land where cotton is grown on collective farms. The collectives are divided into brigades, work is planned by an elected council and, to encourage individual effort, competitions among brigades award bonuses. Families are granted large areas of land where they grow fruits and vegetables for profit while raising large families; life is better than in Moscow. But there is a price: poisonous chemicals endanger workers and irrigation drains water from communities, increasing unemployment.
