They discuss the differences between the cultures of Japan and America and how these differences influence the relations between the two countries. Mr. Fallows emphasizes the subjects of "tribal" differences, the division of labor and code of behavior. Through his own family's experiences, he has also seen the Japanese culture on a personal level which can help to explain the culture on a much larger scale.
