- (Exploring the Religions of South Asia series) Pilgrimage in Hinduism takes the form of a special or personal vow by which one gains merit or, perhaps, fulfills a wish. A pilgrimage is a journey to some known manifestation of power. Seven of the most important cities of pilgrimage are Kasi (Varanasi), Ayodhya, Mathura, Maya (Hardvar), Avantika (Ujjain), Dvaraka and Kanci (Kanchipuram). Professor David M. Knipe discusses various rites and describes, in detail, a regional pilgrimage to Pandhanpur.
