Down and Out in America*

  • 1987 ----- color ----- 55 min ----- vhs
  • Takes a hard look at poverty in America. Many farmers in the Midwest are being driven off their land because they cannot meet their mortgage payments. In Los Angeles a number of the homeless worked together to build shelters on a downtown lot for which they paid the owner one dollar a year for rent. He went bankrupt and the lot was evacuated and bulldozed. In Manhattan poor Latinos banded together to renovate abandoned apartments, neglected by the city. Some of the people have been imprisoned or taken to court for trespassing. Asks how long can we ignore the nightmare of poverty.
