- (Struggles for Poland series, Part 8) For many of its citizens, to be Polish is to be Catholic. Following World War I and the events of the Russian Revolution, the Church positioned itself on the political right as a reaction to secular Bolshevism. Fostering a vision of a Catholic Poland, the church encouraged attempts to boycott and otherwise discourage Jews and Orthodox Ukrainians. The events of World War II led the church to seek ways of surviving, adapting and prospering in the midst of the new Communist state. Today, after the election of the Bishop of Krakow, Cardinal Karol Wojtyla, to Pope John Paul II, the influence of the Roman Catholic Church in Poland has never been greater.
