(Struggles for Poland series, Part 5)
During the events of the Second World War, Polish soldiers fought the Axis Powers on all fronts--the Battle of Britain, Monte Cassino and in Normandy, among others. Despite the memory of the Soviet involvement in the partitioning of Poland, Polish troops fought alongside the Soviet Army against Nazi Germany, taking part in the Soviet Army's drive on Berlin. But as the step-child of Europe, Poland was again and again betrayed by her neighbors and friends. At the close of the war, Russia, Britain and the United States agreed to Stalin's claims for 42 percent of Poland's pre-war territory to the west, slicing the nation once again in two.
