Its lands and people had been gradually dismantled and annexed over the years by Russia, Prussia and Austria-Hungary. However, two Polish leaders, Jozef Pilsudski and Roman Dmowski, had a dream of sovereign state of Poland. A series of major events including the 1905 Russo-Japanese War, World War I and the Bolshevik Revolution provided an opportunity for independence. On November 11, 1918, Poland regained its status as a free nation and Jozef Pilsudski was proclaimed its leader. But what were the boundaries of this new nation and who were its people?
