After the Han dynasty China was divided into three kingdoms--Wu, Shu-han and Wei--but warring among them decimated the population. The Emperor allowed non-Chinese tribes inside the Great Wall. The empire evolves into the Northern and Southern Dynasties (386-589 A.D.). Compares the influence of Buddhism and Confucianism. Achievements in the arts, sciences and technology reached historical heights and the North and South gradually merged into a new Chinese tradition.
