- Maria Gutierrez is the daughter of Hispanic migrant farmworkers. At the age of fourteen she was illiterate, unable to read Spanish, unable to read or write English. In a California migrant labor camp she entered school for the first time. Four years later she distinguished herself by winning a four year scholarship to the University of California. Chronicles a life of hardship and ambition and tells a story of parental support and personal motivation that offers encouragement and presents a dynamic role model for others.
