- The International Hotel of San Francisco was for several decades a home to Filipinos who had come to the United States in search of a better way of life. Around the hotel grew "Manilatown". In 1968, the owners of the I Hotel announced their intention to destroy the hotel and build a parking garage. The residents of the hotel and the Filipino community were threatened. For nine years the community fought the planned demolition. On August 4, 1977, 300 law enforcement officers forcibly removed the I Hotel's residents, and shortly thereafter the hotel was demolished.
