Chinese Gold: The Chinese of the Monterey Bay
- 1987 ----- color ----- 42 min ----- vhs
- With the California Gold Rush of the 1850's, thousands of Chinese immigrated to the United States. The labor and industriousness of the new arrivals contributed significantly to the economic development of the American West. Yet in 1882, responding to racist demands and economic protectionists, the Congress passed the Chinese Exclusion Act, forbidding further immigration of Chinese labor and preventing the resident Chinese from becoming citizens or owning property. The early days are retraced through the memories and photo albums of those descended from the original immigrants, and looks at the contemporary status of Chinese-Americans in Monterey Bay.
