- From ancient times, there has been speculation about the smallest unit of matter, called the atom. Since it could not be seen with the naked eye, proving its existence has been a problem. Philip Morrison offers a tour of the beginnings of the quest for a proof of the atom's existence. Today, with the aid of powerful electron microscopes, scientists have succeeded in visualizing atoms. Morrison goes on to explain how science has gone further than the proof of atoms by creating a Quantum theory which outlines the inner behavior of the atom.
