• Pirandello seeks to distinguish between dramatic reality and dramatic illusion, between acting and artifice in real life, between reality and truth, between people and the characters of his plot. In Pirandello's view man begins as nothing in particular and then takes on some pattern by assuming a role. All roles are disguises and life an endless comedy of illusion reduced, in the final analysis, to absurdity.
