Flower Drum Song*

(Directed by Henry Koster, music by Richard Rodgers, lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein 2nd; with Nancy Kwan, James Shigeta, Juanita Hall, Jack Soo, Benson Fong and Miyoshi Umeki) Filled with songs and dances this musical comedy revolves around an Asian girl who comes to San Francisco for an arranged marriage. While Rodgers and Hammerstein treated racial tensions in South Pacific with compassion and understanding, the one "joke" premise--the Americanization of Chinese citizens--in this production is unexpected and decidedly not funny.
