Nights of Cabiria* (Le Notte de Cabiria)

(Directed by Federico Fellini; with Giulietta Masina, Francois Perier, Franca Marzi, Amedeo Nazzari, Dorian Gray, Aldo Silvani) Cabiria, the street-walker, has precisely the opposite problem from Fellini's male protagonists. She, too, needs love and longs to be uniquely important to someone. But instead of expecting continual sacrifice from the men in her life, she gives herself to them too completely, too trustingly. Consequently she is often exploited, robbed and even physically endangered. She may feign independence and even arrogance, but such poses are just a superficial defense.
