- 1986 ----- color ----- 27 min ----- vhs
- During the early part of the 20th century, many picture brides immigrated from the Far East to Hawaii. Arranged marriages through an exchange of pictures was one way many women tried to benefit their families and secure their own futures. They came from crowded farm villages with dreams of Hawaii as a land of opportunity and personal freedom. What they found there was something quite different. Using personal interviews with 20 picture brides, all over 80, and archival photographs, this fascinating presentation explores the sad and trying time of the picture brides and how they managed to survive.
