(Directed by Akira Kurosawa; with Toshiro Mifune, Machiko Kyo, Masayuki Mori, Takashi Shimura) Kurosawa delves into the mysteries of "truth," retelling the story of a murder and rape in testimony from the murdered man, his ravished wife, the murderer, the arresting constable and a "neutral" bystander. Their versions couldn't be more different as each adjusts the facts to make himself or herself look good. The film's triumph is less in its philosophical conclusions than its hypnotic visual and cutting rhythms, sensuous imagery and use of the forest to provide an hallucinatory atmosphere one step removed from any absolute reality.
