Olympia, Part 1: Festival of the People* (Olympia--Fest der Volker)
- 1936 ----- b & w ----- 115 min ----- vhs
After being commissioned by the 1936 Olympic committee to create a feature film of the Berlin Olympics, filmmaker Leni Riefenstahl decided against using a standard documentary approach. By combining the poetry of bodies in motion with close-ups of athletes in the heat of competition, Riefenstahl made a timeless film that celebrates the human body. Part 1 includes an abstract introduction, the carrying of the flame from Greece, the lighting of the torch and the track and field events where American runner Jessie Owens won an unprecedented four gold medals.
