(Directed by Jean Renoir; with Jean Gabin, Pierre Fresnay, Erich von Stroheim, Marcel Dalio) Three gentlemen from the upper classes of their respective warring nations meet in a prisoner of war camp during World War I. One of them is the captor, played by Erich von Stroheim, who gives a performance of pure steel. A superbly directed film, it tragically conveys the futility of the sacrifice of men in order to protect a world that is soon to be gone forever.
