Dolce Vita, La*

(Directed and written by Federico Fellini with Marcello Mastroianni) Fellini presents a savage, nightmarish vision of modern Rome--cold, decadent, cruel and dehumanizing. It is a world geared to destroy all vestiges of human sensitivity or open, honest communication between individuals. Marcello, the jaded central figure, drifts aimlessly through this landscape, hoping to find some kind of inner enrichment, but disinclined to give of himself to the people who might provide it.
