Olvidados, Los* (The Young and the Damned)

  • 1950 ----- b & w ----- 88 min ----- vhs
  • (Directed by Luis Bunuel; with Estela Inda, Miguel Inclan, Roberto Cobo, Alfonso Majia) Bunuel systematically undercuts the conventional solutions to a familiar social problem ("delinquent" children and poverty) in order to dramatize the need for more radical (and possibly surrealistic) solutions. The film is densely populated with physically and/or socially deformed characters and one measure of its uncompromising nature is in its refusal to sentimentalize the children. Mexico is seen largely in terms of beggars, cripples, homeless children, shabby rooms and seemingly abandoned construction sites.
