To Taste a Hundred Herbs: Gods, Ancestors and Medicine in a Chinese Village*
- 1986 ----- color ----- 58 min ----- 16mm
- (One Village in China series) Dr. Shen Fasheng, Long Bow Village's doctor, is, in many ways, a typical peasant doctor. He learned tratitional Chinese medicine from his father and grandfather and then received some basic training in Western medicine through government programs. Dr. Shen's family are outside the dominant tradition of old China as well as the Marxist ideology of New China; they are Catholic. Interwoven throughout the film are moments of daily life: chores, celebrations, meals, play and prayer. The way the family members relate and interact reveals one of the most enduring Chinese values, that of a strong family bond.
