Growing Old in America, Part 2: Crisis in Health Care
- 1985 ----- color ----- 51 min ----- vhs
- (ABC News Closeup) Providing adequate health care for the elderly is rapidly becoming a crisis in America. The health care system has been slow to respond to the special needs of the aging; there are not enough doctors trained in geriatrics. The new federal emphasis on cost-containment in Medicare and the new rules in hospitals have had a dire effect on older patients, especially the poor. There is a shortage of nursing home beds and home care services for the elderly who need help. Reported by Hugh Downs. (Deposited by KOMO TV4) (Commercial messages are included.)
