  • Presents the extraordinary life cycle and ecology of the African termite. These tiny blind creatures, in numbers that are unimaginable, construct towering hills weighing tons. Inside, by ingeniously controlling air flow and humidity, they maintain a constant 85 degrees F., ±1 degree. Their enormous queen lays 30,000 eggs a day for 15 years; all others are sterile. They grow their own special mushroom food. Odd species of animals prey on them, others make homes in their mounds. Most importantly, the termites, by eating dead wood, efficiently recycle it's nutrients into the food energy cycle.
