- Focuses on the mental, physical and emotional letdown that affects many people in the helping professions. "Burnouts" affect sensitive and idealistic people more, not because of stressful work but because not enough support and rewards are offered. Among the professions considered are policemen, clergy, teachers, counselors, physicians, nurses and welfare workers. Many people who are enthusiastic on a job at first, feel they end up as "paper movers" who are not allowed to use their own judgement. Some reactions to "burnout" are physical or emotional illness, giving up on life altogether, turning to alcohol or dropping out of society. Several suggestions are made to avoid or overcome this letdown.
