- The Synchronous Meteorological Satellite (SMS-1) is positioned in a geostationary orbit over the equatorial Atlantic, at an altitude of 36,000 km. In addition to full disk images, small geographical area images, sectors, can also be obtained for nearly continuous viewing of the ground and cloud cover in great detail. Shows examples of visible imagery coverage provided by the satellite, unusual haze and pollution sequences over the eastern United States, infared imagery and new techniques for simultaneous viewing of visible and infared imagery of weather systems.
