  • (Historical Collection) (From Death Valley Days) The story of how a cutting from the "Washington Elm" in Massachusetts, the historic tree under whose branches George Washington took command of the Continental Army, was transplanted and grown on the University of Washington campus. In 1923, when a storm blew down and killed the original elm, the University of Washington gave to the city of Cambridge a grandscion of the original "Washington Elm" to plant on the Commons.
