Voices of the People: The Elections in India 1977
- 1978 ----- color ----- 30 min ----- 16mm
- Twenty-one months earlier, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had declared a national emergency, jailed thousands of her opponents, suppressed criticism, outlawed strikes and imposed censorship on the media. When she called for national elections in January 1977, she allowed her opponents barely two months to emerge from jail and organize their political campaigns. Narrated from the perspective of one opposed to the authoritarian rule of Prime Minister Gandhi, the film is based on extensive traveling, documenting and interviewing of a large cross-section of people in Northern India during the days immediately preceding and following the 1977 elections.
