- Thomas James White Hawk, one American Indian who tried to make it in the white man's world and failed, was a promising pre-med student at the University of South Dakota. Now, the 21-year-old Sioux Indian is serving a life sentence for murder and rape. No attempt is made to excuse his crimes, but instead looks at the case as an extreme example of the alienation of Indians who are caught in a cultural conflict.
