Benin Kingship Rituals

  • Shows the kingship rituals of the Olsa of Benin (present capital of the mid-western state of Nigeria) which reached its peak in the second half of the 19th century. With the British conquest, it declined until revived after the restoration of the monarchy in 1914. Shows the greatest ritual, the Igwe festival when the Olsa's divine powers are renewed for the coming year.
