Torrey Canyon Disaster

- The giant tanker, Torrey Canyon, was wrecked on the Seven Stones Reef off the Isles of Scilly in March, 1967; its cargo of oil spreading pollution far and wide. The need to clean beaches and harbors in time for summer tourists resulted in a mammoth desperation rescue operation which destroyed more flora and fauna than the oil itself. Underscores the need for a more responsible and thoughtful relationship between man and nature.
