Torches of the Todaiji
- 1974 ----- color ----- 40 min ----- 16mm/vhs
- For the past 1200 years during the first two weeks of March, eleven specially selected monks of the Todaiji Temple in Nara have prayed for peace and happiness on behalf of the sins of the world. During the ceremony in the Nigatsudo (The Great Hall of the Buddha) huge torches are lit and carried throughout the Temple in the belief that the fire of the torches will protect the monks from evil spirits and burn away all defilement. In Japan, as elsewhere in the world, religious ceremony is a fountainhead from which all forms of dramatic arts have blossomed. Onoe Shoroku, one of the leading Kabuki actors of Japan, has created a new Kabuki Odori (dance-drama) based on a legendary incident which occurred during the temple rite (Shuni-e). Explains various sections of the shuni-e and follows the new dance-drama from its conception through the first performance. (In Japanese with English subtitles)
