Throne of Blood (Kumonosu-Jo)

  • 1957 ----- b & w ----- 108 min ----- withdrawn -----
  • (Directed by Akira Kurosawa; with Toshiro Mifune, Isuzu Yamada, Takashi Shimura) Kurosawa's version of Macbeth spares no effort in creating an atmosphere of obsessive madness and supernatural compulsion. Although nominally set in medieval Japan, the action is dislocated in terms of time and place. The high-contrast black and white cinematography, use of a ubiquitous artificial mist and employment of certain Noh theatre techniques make us feel that we are watching a ritualized series of events and responses, totally beyond the reach of rational intervention. Considered by some critics to be the best version of Macbeth on film. (NOTE: Due to problems with the master, the first 20 minutes of this print is slightly out of sound sync.) (In Japanese with English subtitles)
