Helen Keller could neither see nor hear, but she found her deafness to be the greater handicap. NOVA explores the world of one million Americans who lack the ability to hear human speech--and some of the techniques used to help them communicate. People who have succeeded despite their handicap are interviewed: a professor and leading advocate of deaf rights, members of the National Theater for the Deaf and workers in a factory founded by a deaf man with the purpose of hiring deaf employees.
