Battle of Culloden, The
- 1969 ----- b & w ----- 72 min ----- withdrawn -----
Directed by Peter Watkins (The War Game). Recreates the struggle in 1746 between the rebellious Highland Scots' forces of Bonnie Prince Charles, pretender to the British throne, and the regular British army sent to Scotland to put down the rebellion. The battle was a fiasco for the Scots. Watkins uses the battle to study the reasons why men fight, and to show how hideous modern war is. Parallels can be drawn between attitudes toward war then and now.
