River, The

  • 1937 ----- b & w ----- 31 min ----- 16mm
  • Written and directed by Pare Lorentz, photographed by Willard van Dyke, Stacy Woodard and Floyd Crosby with music by Virgil Thomson. A panoramic view is unfolded of the Mississippi River basin, of the vast industrial and agricultural expansion that led to its exploitation and ruin and of the later efforts to control its floods by reforestation and other measures. Beautifully photographed, with a much-quoted lyrical commentary, this visualization of one of the most dramatic chapters in American history has come to be considered a masterpiece of the American documentary film.
