- In their rush to modernization, the developing African countries import European economical and organizational structures and are neglecting their own indigenous "primitive" institutions. In Gabon, for example, traditional medicine is decaying and in some cases is prohibited, replaced by European hospitals and medicine. Traditional medicine, which has developed organically and is integrated in its social context, is being replaced by "modern" medicine, an alienating, institutionalized, medicine of the rich. In their quest for independence, developing countries try to copy European systems and structure which only deepen their dependency on the West.
