Restless Earth: Earthquakes
- 1971 ----- color ----- 26 min ----- 16mm
- Theories explaining causes of earthquakes and methods of "defusing" earthquakes are examined. Nearly all earthquakes occur at the boundaries of the plates making up the earth's outer shell. Scientists in the Middle East plot positions of previous earthquakes to determine the direction plates are moving. On the drilling ship, Glomar Challenger, others attempt to find the age of mud on the ocean floor in order to test a theory explaining the movement between the Pacific Plate and the North American Plate. The San Andreas Fault--which could produce a major earthquake at any time, destroying San Francisco--could be "defused" at a cost of $500 million.
