Balinese Trance Seance, A
- 1980 ----- color ----- 28 min ----- 16mm
In Bali, the balian, or traditional healer mediates between the supernatural and the human worlds. Jero Tapakan is both a spirit medium and a masseuse in a central Balinese village. Clients consult with Jero in her household shrine, bringing offerings of rice, flowers and woven coconut leaves. Lighting an incense brazier, sprinkling holy water and reciting mantras, Jero enters a trance and attempts to communicate with the spirit of her clients' deceased son, in order to determine the cause of his death and his wishes for the forthcoming cremation.
