- Crude oil is a complex mixture of hydrocarbon compounds. Since they boil and subsequently condense at different temperatures, it is possible to separate them into various groups, or fractions, by distillation. From these fractions, some are selected for further refining by catalytic cracking or catalytic reforming into high octane gasoline. The role of catalysts in a chemical reaction and their importance to oil refining are dramatically illustrated. (Deposited by the Shell Oil Company)
