Priory, the Only Home I've Got

• Extended-care hospitals exist to treat the chronically ill. The Priory is a public extended-care hospital in Victoria, B.C. where treatment includes some unusual aspects. Designed to stimulate an interest in living and a sense of self-worth at a time when a person needs constant care, treatment is based on the theory that even the ordinary activities of a patient's life contain many elements of therapy. Patients are therefore encouraged to do as much as they can for themselves. Being confined to a wheelchair is not the great equalizer it might seem to be; some cope with it much better than others.
