- (Crossroads of History Series, Part 7) Persia has existed for over 2,500 years. A strong monarchy uniting the country, able to resist foreign intervention, eventually met its downfall opening the way to foreign intervention. The Industrial Revolution in Europe, the colonial expansion of Russia and Great Britain and the discovery of the vast oil resources added to the climate of unrest. Persia's own princes, religious leaders, patriotic zealots completed the atmosphere of open distrust, fear, cruelty and greed that welcomed the 20th Century.
