Avalanche Dynamics: Characteristics of Snow Avalanches in Motion

- Sequences illustrate dry snow avalanches in motion, ranging in size from minor snow movements to large and destructive avalanches accompanied by extensive dust cloud formation and wind blast. Several examples of slab avalanche release are depicted which demonstrate the unstable character and dangerous nature of this type of avalanche. Scenes of medium-sized avalanches show the difference in size and character of motion which is determined by the stability of the snow in the middle of the avalanche path.
