- (Christians, The series, Part 10) Modern revivalism had its origins in the 18th century, when the scriptures were brought from behind the closed doors of polite, aristocratic churches to the ordinary people. On the eve of the French Revolution, 129 of 130 French bishops came from noble families. The church in England had its own kind of elitism. The first voices to arouse the church were George Whitefield and John Wesley. While Wesley continued his ministry, forming small Methodist communities wherever he went in England and Wales, Whitefield traveled to America where revivalism and other forms of religious enthusiasm would find a permanent home.
