- Begins with a series of demonstrations showing the great variety in the behavior of elements. Shows how Mendeleev systemized much of this variety by means of his periodic table. Group and period are explained. Similarities between elements of the same group are demonstrated. The importance of chemical formulae in establishing common characteristics of elements in the same group are emphasized. The weaknesses of Mendeleev's table are illustrated. The distribution of metals, semi-metals and non-metals are used to convert Mendeleev's periodic table to the modern long form.
