- Scientists travel to great depths to unravel the mysteries of plate tectonics. Examines information about continental drift gathered from deep-sea research. In the submersible vehicle, Alvin, geologists and other scientists descend two miles underwater to explore the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, where two plates are drifting apart at the speed of about an inch a year. Scientists also study the Cayman Trough in the Caribbean and the Galapagos Rift off the coast of South America. Earthquakes and volcanoes provide the most dramatic indications of movement of the earth's crust. Near an underwater volcano in the Pacific, previously unknown forms of life have been discovered.
