Late in August in Badakhshan, in northern Afghanistan, nomad caravans are on their way home from summer pastures high in the mountains close to the Russian border. They will spend a month on the road and will travel more than 200 miles before reaching their winter homes near Kunduz. Because they travel the same route twice a year, they find it profitable to carry goods to trade with farmers living in the mountains. Some become so successful at trading that they buy land, leave their families behind and become full time traders.
