Night Mail

  • (Historical Collection) (Produced by John Grierson, music by Benjamin Britten, verse by W. H. Auden) A record of the nightly journey of the Postal Special from London to Glasgow, this film is an intimate investigation of the postal workers on their job. The complex mixing of images, natural sound, music and verse commentary make it also a technical and aesthetic landmark in documentary and, indeed, in the history of the sound film itself.
