- With the advent of World War I, Nicholas' general mobilization in 1914 led to serious repercussions for Russia. With Nicholas attempting to lead his troops at the front, the country was, in effect, ruled by Alexandra who was, in turn, ruled by Rasputin. The numerous defeats at the front combined with the assassination of Rasputin plunges Russia into chaos with the cry for change coming loudest from the Duma, the council that Nicholas had been forced to accept 1n 1905. Unable to rule, Nicholas signs abdication papers for himself and his son. The Russian Revolution has begun.
