New Look at Leewenhoek's "Wee Beasties,'' A
- 1976 ----- color ----- 12 min ----- 16mm
- While not the inventor of the microscope, Leewenhoek was the first observer to build and use lenses to study the world of living organisms which lie beyond the perceptual limits of the human eye. Key passages from his notes and reports are part of the narration. Using a specially modified differential interference microscope, the external structures stand out in sharp contrast to the background and clear motion pictures of cilia, cirri and flagella in living protists are seen. Paramecium, Euglena, Paranema, Trichonympha, Volvox, Amoeba, Arcella, Vorticella, Stentor and Suplotes are all shown in detail.
